About
Lilium 'Pigalle' is a bulbous lily (Lilium, family Liliaceae) bearing the large, often prominent flowers typical of true lilies. It flowers in the UK from June to August. A herbaceous perennial, it regenerates each season from a scaly underground bulb and may produce stem-roots as the shoot emerges. As a true lily it is highly toxic to cats.

Lilium 'Pigalle' sits within the genus Lilium (family Liliaceae), a group of bulbous, herbaceous perennials native to temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Members of this genus are noted for large, showy blooms and for arising from scaly, tunicless bulbs; many species and cultivars range in height from roughly 30–180 cm. In the UK Lilium 'Pigalle' brings its bloom from June to August. Cultural handling follows the basic bulbous-lily pattern: the plant dies back to the bulb after the season and reshoots the following year. Most true lilies form their bulbs at some depth in the soil and may produce adventitious stem-roots on the emerging stem, so allow space for a freely developing bulb and avoid disturbing it once established. Taller stems can benefit from support while in flower because the genus commonly produces prominent blooms on long stems. Use Lilium 'Pigalle' where a mid-summer display of lilies is wanted; the flowering window of June to August makes it useful for filling the central or rear positions in a mixed border where height is acceptable. Take care with placement if cats have access, since all true lilies are highly toxic to them and ingestion of any part can be life-threatening.
