Bergenias earn their keep through the winter, when their broad, leathery, near-circular leaves - the reason for the common name elephant's ears - take on burnished red and bronze tints and hold their ground while everything around them has vanished. Thick fleshy spikes of pink, magenta or white flowers push up on red stems in early spring. They form slowly spreading rhizomatous mats, thrive in difficult positions including dry shade, and are as useful for edging and ground cover as for their flowers.
