Streptopus simplex belongs to the lily family and is part of a small group of temperate, shade-adapted herbs found across colder and temperate parts of Eurasia and North America. As a perennial it spreads from underground rhizomes and typically bears only one or two pendent flowers at a time, often concealed beneath the leaf canopy. Choose a cool, shady site that mimics a woodland floor; a spot beneath deciduous trees or shrubs is ideal because the flowers are produced close to the leaves rather than on tall stems. Allow space for the rhizomes to extend and form loose colonies rather than crowding plants tightly together. Because the blossoms are small and nodding, they reward close inspection and work well at the front of shadier borders, beneath trees, or in naturalistic, wooded beds where their low habit remains visible. Streptopus simplex flowers in May to June, when its discreet blooms appear tucked under the foliage.
