Its culms are 30–75 cm long and the leaf-blades 20–35 cm long by 0.6–1 mm wide. It is native to Altay, Central European Russia, Czechia-Slovakia, East European Russia, Iran and other regions. In the garden it prefers full sun and loam soil. In UK gardens it is hardy through an average UK winter (RHS H4). Suggested uses include borders and prairie-style plantings. It tolerates neutral soils, well-drained conditions and south-facing aspects.
