Papaver orientale 'Marcus Perry' is a perennial poppy from the Caucasus region, northeastern Turkey and northern Iran that forms an upright plant to about 1.0 m and produces its main display between May and August. Its heritage in those dry continental climates explains the preference for sharp light and soil that does not remain waterlogged. Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with sandy or loamy soil; exposure should be full sun. Soils described as well-drained, or moist but well-drained, suit this cultivar best and reduce risk of root problems. In UK terms H7 equates to fully hardy, so plants will tolerate the cold of outdoor cultivation across the country; the equivalent USDA range is 3–9. Give specimens room at the back of a sunny herbaceous border or in any planting where a 1.0 m upright presence is wanted during its May–August flowering period. Positioning where the soil drains freely is more important than feeding regime, and the plant’s mature height makes it useful for height and seasonal impact in open, sunny parts of the garden.
