Papaver (Oriental Group) 'Redizelle' sits within the genus Papaver, a group of some 70–100 species that includes frost-tolerant annuals, biennials and perennials native to temperate and colder regions of Eurasia, Africa and North America. The Oriental Group name places 'Redizelle' among poppies prized for their bold, seasonal blooms and for producing distinctive fruiting capsules once flowering finishes. Flower structure in this genus is diagnostic: buds have two sepals that fall away at opening, and flowers produce several petals surrounding numerous stamens and a compound pistil. After flowering the ovary forms a unilocular capsule capped by the dried stigmatic disc; when the capsule opens it releases very small seeds that can be dispersed by wind and movement of the stem. Expect the crop of seed in the capsules to be the main route to new plants in the following season, so allow some capsules to mature where you want seedlings or remove them if you prefer to limit self-seeding. Timing is straightforward: blooms appear from May to August, so position 'Redizelle' where you can enjoy that seasonal display and where mature seedheads are acceptable. Note the retained disc on top of the seed capsule, a useful identification feature after petals have fallen.
