Lobelia 'Bees' Flame' is a cultivated selection within the genus Lobelia (family Campanulaceae), a group that includes annual, perennial and shrubby types from warmer regions worldwide. As a garden selection it follows the genus pattern of simple, alternate leaves and two-lipped tubular flowers, making it a recognisable summer-blooming lobelia in borders and containers. In the UK it flowers from June to September. Plant 'Bees' Flame' into a moist, well-drained soil and position it where it receives good daylight with some protection from the hottest afternoon sun. Keep soil evenly moist through the flowering season and feed lightly while blooms are being produced to sustain flowering. Remove spent flowers to extend the display and cut back any leggy shoots to encourage fresh, compact growth. In practice, 'Bees' Flame' suits summer containers, hanging baskets and the front of mixed borders where continuous bloom is needed through the summer months. Combine with coarser-leaved perennials or annuals for contrast, and give a light trim after midsummer to refresh the plant and prolong flowering through September.
