Hedysarum coronarium (Sulla) is a perennial herb valued where biomass and nectar are required together: it has a history of cultivation for animal fodder, hay and honey production in its native Mediterranean range. The species originates from Malta, North Africa and southern Europe and is best regarded as a crop or meadow component rather than a tender border plant. Choose a sunny, open position with freely draining soil; Sulla performs where soils are not waterlogged and where moisture ranges from dry to medium. Seed or plants are typically placed where they receive uninterrupted sun, as the species has a clear preference for full sun exposure. Avoid heavy clay that holds water if the aim is reliable regrowth for hay or fodder. In UK situations it is most useful as a field margin, bee-forage strip or component of summer-cut hay mixtures, where its June–August flowering contributes a summer nectar source for honey production. Management will follow the aim — cutting for hay after flowering or grazing timing to leave sufficient bloom for pollinators — and its known role is as a productive, nectar-bearing fodder species rather than an ornamental flowerbed specimen.
