Euphorbia amygdaloides 'Brithembottom' belongs to the Euphorbiaceae and originates from woodland habitats in Europe, Turkey and the Caucasus. Plants form clumps to around 0.8 m with dark green, slightly hairy leaves and carry the species' characteristic green-yellow cyathia through the main season from May to September. Give it a shady site where soils remain on the dry side — it is one of the few perennials that tolerates dry shade beneath trees. Expect it to spread by underground rhizomes and form colonies; plant with this behaviour in mind or install a barrier if space is limited. When dividing or removing plants, lift roots rather than pulling to reduce regrowth. Handle with care: the milky latex can irritate skin, so wear gloves when cutting stems or dividing plants and wash any exposed skin promptly. In the garden it suits under deciduous trees, woodland edges or mixed-drifts where a persistent, spreading ground cover is required; avoid placing it where its spreading habit could encroach on small beds.
