Eremurus spectabilis is a perennial from the Asphodelaceae native to the eastern Mediterranean and the Caucasus. It grows to roughly 1.0 m and puts on its main display from May to July. In the UK it suits a sunny, sheltered spot where it receives full sun throughout the day. Plant into sandy or loamy soil with good drainage; heavy, waterlogged ground is the main risk to establishment. Aim for a sunny aspect and an exposed position that receives direct light for most of the day. The species is rated H7 for UK hardiness (fully hardy) and corresponds to USDA zones 5–9, so it will withstand typical British winters when sited correctly and not waterlogged in winter. Use Eremurus spectabilis as a tall vertical element near the rear of a herbaceous border or in gravel and Mediterranean-style beds where full sun and free-draining soil can be achieved.
