About
Banksia aemula, commonly known as the wallum banksia, is a shrub of the family Proteaceae. Found from Bundaberg south to Sydney on the Australian east coast, it is encountered as a shrub or a tree to 8 m (26 ft) in coastal heath on deep sandy soil, known as Wallum. It has wrinkled orange bark and shiny green serrated leaves, with green-yellow flower spikes, known as inflorescences, appearing in autumn. The flower spikes turn grey as they age and large grey follicles appear. It is native to New Guinea, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and other regions. In the garden it prefers full sun and loam and sand soil. In UK gardens it is half-hardy and may need winter protection in colder areas (RHS H3). Suggested uses include coastal, gravel garden, rock garden, mediterranean climate plants and patio and container plants. It tolerates acid and neutral soils, well-drained conditions and south-facing and west-facing aspects.
