A member of the genus Viola and the family Violaceae, Viola rugulosa is a perennial species native to several Canadian provinces and territories: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Yukon. Its repeated bloom periods — April to June and again in September and October — make it notable among temperate violets. Plant where it will receive partial shade and in soil that is well drained but retains moisture. Incorporate organic matter to improve both moisture retention and structure; keep the root zone evenly damp without allowing standing water. Although it favours a shaded aspect, avoid heavy shade where flowering may be reduced. Use Viola rugulosa at the front of a deciduous border, as underplanting beneath larger shrubs and small trees, or in cool, shaded containers where soil moisture can be managed. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and reduce surface evaporation. Expect concentrated flowering in the spring months of April–June and a second display in September–October.
