Trollius yunnanensis is a perennial member of the Ranunculaceae, native to regions of China and Myanmar. It is most often grown for its seasonal display in late spring and early summer, with flowering from May to July. Position it where soil remains reliably moist but does not stagnate; the plant prefers rich, well-drained soil and will tolerate either full sun or some afternoon shade. Plant into moisture-retentive border soils or the damp edge of a mixed perennial bed where water is available through spring and early summer. Because the species favours a rich substrate, incorporate well-rotted compost at planting to help sustain flowering. Mulch will help retain moisture through the early season but avoid waterlogging at the crown. Where space allows, use Trollius yunnanensis in groups to make the most of its seasonal presence; single plants can be overwhelmed in dry, exposed spots. Expect best performance where soil moisture is maintained into the flowering period, since prolonged drought through May to July will reduce bloomfulness and vigor.
