Trautvetteria caroliniensis (Carolina bugbane) is a perennial herb in the buttercup family, native to British Columbia. Its flowering window is June to July, when the plant bears white blooms that are among the few to appear in deep shade at that time of year. The species is adapted to sites where soil stays moist and nutrient-rich rather than dry, exposed beds. Position the plant in partial shade or full shade on a moisture-retentive, well-drained, rich soil. Keep soil consistently damp through summer by applying an organic mulch and watering during prolonged dry spells; these measures help sustain flowering and leaf vigour. Split or replant established clumps in spring or autumn when soil conditions are workable, taking care not to let crowns dry out after lifting. Use Carolina bugbane in shaded borders, beneath trees where root competition is not extreme, or in a woodland-style planting where moisture holds.
