Overview

Silene cognata is a clump forming herbaceous perennial in the genus Silene, part of the Caryophyllaceae family, with deciduous foliage. Silene cognata grows best in full sun, and tolerates loam soils and neutral pH. Its UK hardiness is rated H6. Suggested uses include cottage and informal garden, wildflower meadow, wildlife gardens and flower borders and beds.

In the wild it is found in a wide variety of habitats, from 500 to 2,000 m (1,600 to 6,600 ft) above sea level. It is occasionally available from commercial suppliers, usually under its synonym Lychnis cognata. In Korea its leaves are harvested in the wild and sold in local markets as a food. In the wild it grows across China North-Central, China Southeast, Inner Mongolia, Korea, Manchuria and other regions. Grow it in full sun and loam soil. In UK gardens it is very hardy across most of the UK (RHS H6). It works well for cottage and informal garden, wildflower meadow, wildlife gardens and flower borders and beds. It tolerates neutral soils, well-drained conditions and south-facing aspects.
