Blooming runs from June to September, so its main contribution to the border is extended summer colour rather than a single flush. Gardeners should plan with that long flowering window in mind when pairing with other perennials. Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with soil that holds moisture yet drains freely; heavy waterlogging will reduce flowering and healthy growth. Improve typical garden soil with well-rotted organic matter at planting to establish good root contact, firm the soil and water well. A layer of mulch through summer conserves moisture and suppresses weeds. Prune in late winter or very early spring to remove dead or crossing wood and to open the centre to air and light; a second, light tidy-up after the first flowering can encourage the later-season blooms that run through to September.
