It carries a spreading, branched form that can read as a single-stemmed tree or a multi-stemmed specimen on poorer ground, and it is used where an architectural tree is required. Plant in a sunny spot on free‑draining loam or sand; the species tolerates acid through neutral to alkaline soils but performs best where water does not sit around the roots. It will take exposed as well as sheltered positions and is rated H6 for the UK — very hardy under British conditions — so it withstands most winter exposure gardeners are likely to face.
