It is a large tree, up to 15–25 m (50–80 ft) high and 1.2 m (4 ft) in diameter. The trunk is often crooked. Needles are in bundles of five. Mature cones are large, to 10 cm (4 in) long and 4–5 cm (1.6–2.0 in) wide. It is native to Taiwan and TW. In the garden it prefers full sun and most soil types. In UK gardens it is fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H7). Suggested uses include architectural, city and courtyard gardens, coastal and cottage and informal garden. It tolerates soil of any pH, well-drained conditions and south-facing and west-facing aspects. Well-drained, preferably acidic soil in full sun. Most pines are very drought-tolerant once established.
