Pinus massoniana, commonly known as Masson's pine or Chinese red pine, is a species of pine, native to Taiwan, a wide area of central and southern China, including Hong Kong, and northern Vietnam. The distinctive shape of the leaf clusters, which resemble a horse's tail, has given rise to the species' Chinese common name 馬尾松, lit. Grow it in full sun and most soil types. In UK gardens it is fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H7). It works well for architectural, city and courtyard gardens, coastal and cottage and informal garden. It tolerates soil of any pH, well-drained conditions and south-facing and west-facing aspects. Well-drained, preferably acidic soil in full sun. Most pines are very drought-tolerant once established.
