Phyteuma campanuloides is a herbaceous perennial in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae) and originates from Southern Europe. The plant produces upright, tightly packed panicles of narrow, five-lobed flowers that appear in summer; flowering in the UK runs from June to August. Flower colour is most commonly purple, with occasional pale blue, white or pink variants, and the seed is borne in a small capsule containing numerous minute seeds. Position it where the flowerheads can be seen clearly: a sunny or lightly shaded spot with good drainage suits plants that form erect panicles and prefer to avoid sitting in water. Incorporate it into the middle or front of a mixed perennial border where the vertical flower spikes can rise above lower foliage, or allow single stems to show against gravel or rockwork. Collect ripe capsules for seed if you want to propagate, as the fruit contains many small seeds; sowing from seed will maintain the natural variation in flower colour. Expect variation in leaf shape on the same plant, with larger basal leaves and narrower stem leaves, and plan planting so the summer panicles remain visible from paths or seating areas.
