About the genus

Physalis comprises both annuals and rhizomatous perennials characterized by simple or pinnately lobed foliage. The plants produce small, bell-shaped flowers that emerge in the leaf axils. These flowers are succeeded by fleshy berries that can be yellow, red, or purple, and are typically enclosed in enlarged, often vividly colored calyces.
