Oxalis ortgiesii, the fishtail oxalis, is a species of Oxalis (wood sorrel) native to Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru. The three leaflets are deeply cleft at the tip, and purple on the underside. The yellow flowers have three stamen lengths and three pistil lengths, ordered in such a way that stamens and pistil of any one flower are never of the same length, guaranteeing cross-pollination. Grow it in full sun and most soil types. In UK gardens it is hardy through an average UK winter (RHS H4). It works well for patio and container plants, rock garden and cottage and informal garden. It tolerates soil of any pH, well-drained conditions and west-facing and south-facing aspects. Plant after last frost in fertile soil.
