Musa basjoo, the Japanese banana, is a suckering evergreen perennial to 5 m tall with arching, lance-shaped leaves to 3 m long. Drooping terminal spikes of cream flowers are produced in summer, sometimes followed by inedible, green fruits to 6 cm long. The most reliably cold-hardy banana for outdoor cultivation � dramatic in a sheltered, moist, sunny garden.
