LEAVES : distichous, juvenile leaves sometimes of shingle plant form, rarely variegated. FLOWERS : bisexual, perigone absent, lowermost flowers usually sterile. POLLEN : fully zonate, hamburger-shaped, medium-sized (mean 48 µm, range 40-52 µm), exine densely foveolate to subreticulate, sparsely and shallowly foveolate or psilate, apertural exine verrucate or rugulate. STERILE FLOWERS : with 4 minute, conic staminodia, pistillode 2-locular, prismatic, lacking ovules. In the garden it prefers partial shade and loam soil. In UK gardens it needs subtropical warmth and glass protection in the UK (RHS H1b). Suggested uses include houseplants and conservatory and greenhouse. It tolerates soil of any pH, moist but well-drained conditions and south-facing, east-facing and west-facing aspects. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Provide support.
