Melicytus macrophyllus, the large-leaved māhoe, is a small tree up to 6 metres (20 feet) tall, of the family Violaceae. It is endemic to New Zealand. Large-leaved māhoe is found from Kaitaia to the Waitākere Ranges in the North Island. It is similar to M. ramiflorus but is generally smaller, with larger leaves which are often toothed on the upper half. In the garden it prefers full sun and most soil types. In UK gardens it is hardy through an average UK winter (RHS H4). Suggested uses include coastal and cottage and informal garden. It tolerates soil of any pH, moist but well-drained conditions and west-facing, south-facing and east-facing aspects. Plant in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.
