Linaria is a genus of almost 200 species of flowering plants, one of several related groups commonly called toadflax. They are annuals and herbaceous perennials, and the largest genus in the Antirrhineae tribe of the plantain family Plantaginaceae.

As a garden plant it is valued where sunny, open conditions combine with free-draining, gritty ground; it is not suited to heavy, water-retentive soils. Keep its location unshaded so it receives full sun through the day. Plant into well-drained, sandy or rocky soils and avoid sites that remain wet after rain. The species copes with dry to medium soil moisture, so incorporate grit or sharp sand when planting into heavier beds to improve drainage. It establishes best where air circulation is good and the aspect is open rather than shaded by taller perennials or shrubs. In UK gardens place Balkan toadflax in gravel borders, rockeries, dry slopes or the sunniest parts of a mixed perennial border where soil is lean and quick-draining. Regular dead-heading will help maintain a neat appearance and concentrate energy into continued summer flowering. Expect blooms from June to September.
