It is native to just the state of California, where it is known from the northeastern mountain ranges from the Klamath Mountains and the northern Sierra Nevada. It grows in rocky, moist mountain habitat. This is a perennial herb growing from a short, thick taproot and caudex unit. In the garden it prefers full sun and partial shade and loam and sand soil. In UK gardens it is hardy through an average UK winter (RHS H4). Suggested uses include gravel garden, patio and container plants and rock garden. It tolerates acid and neutral soils, well-drained conditions and east-facing, south-facing, west-facing and north-facing aspects. Plant in well-drained soil in a suitable position.
