Iris 'Speck So' is a cultivated Iris (Iridaceae) selected for its seasonal flowering, which occurs from May to July. About the genus

Iris takes its name from the Greek goddess of the rainbow, and for once the naming feels entirely earned. I can't think of another genus that covers so much ground — inky purples, burnt apricots, clean whites, blues that seem lit from inside — or so many situations. There are bearded irises that want their rhizomes baked in full sun, Siberian types happy in ordinary border soil, and species that will sit contentedly at the edge of a pond. What they share is the flower: three petals standing up, three falling away, built with a kind of architectural confidence most plants never attempt. Even out of bloom the foliage earns its place — those upright fans of blue-green leaves hold a border together for months. I grow them for the fortnight in May and June when nothing else in the garden can compete, and I've made my peace with that. Some plants are for the long haul. An iris is an event.

Iris 'Speck So' is a named cultivar within the genus Iris (family Iridaceae) and is maintained in gardens for its defined flowering period from May to July. As a cultivated selection it is handled like other ornamental irises, with attention to siting and crowding rather than elaborate feeding regimes. Planting several clumps together will strengthen the visual effect during its flowering months. Choose a position with good soil drainage and avoid prolonged waterlogging; many Iris cultivars perform best where crowns are not kept permanently wet. Allow space between clumps so stems and leaves have air circulation, and lift and divide congested clumps when flowering has finished to renew vigour. A light feed after flowering encourages fresh shoot development for the following season. In a UK garden, place Iris 'Speck So' where a defined late‑spring to early‑summer display is needed: mixed herbaceous borders, the sunny edge of a shrubbed bed or a dedicated iris bed. Flower spikes are most effective when planted in groups or in a sequence with later‑flowering perennials to extend colour beyond July. Expect renewed flower spikes each year in its May to July window.
