Sometimes this plant is placed in the family Amaryllidaceae or the family Liliaceae. The species is native to the United States, Canada, and northeastern Mexico. In the garden it prefers full sun and partial shade and loam and sand soil. In UK gardens it is hardy in most of the UK (RHS H5). Suggested uses include rock gardens, containers and woodland edges. It tolerates acid and neutral soils, well-drained, moist conditions and south-facing and west-facing aspects. Plant in well-drained soil in a suitable position. Water during establishment.
