Hibiscus coccineus, the American scarlet rose mallow, is a robust, herbaceous perennial to 2 m or more with deeply five-lobed, star-shaped leaves and striking, scarlet, saucer-shaped flowers to 20 cm across in summer. One of the most spectacular of all hardy hibiscus for a sunny, moist border.

Hibiscus are deciduous or evergreen shrubs, trees, annuals or perennials with simple or palmately lobed leaves and large, funnel-shaped, five-petalled flowers over a long season. They encompass everything from hardy border perennials to tropical trees and the economically important kenaf and roselle.
