Despite the common name, it is not taxonomically classified in the lily genus. Gardening enthusiasts and horticulturists have long bred Hemerocallis species for their attractive flowers; a select few species of the genus have edible petals, while some are extremely toxic.

Hemerocallis 'Bobby's Lavender Eyes' belongs to the genus Hemerocallis, a group of perennial, rhizomatous plants that originated in Asia and have been widely bred for their summer-flowering forms. As a cultivar, it shares the genus's basal, arching, strap-like leaves and the characteristically ephemeral blooms that open and fade within a day. Plants in this group arise from fibrous or fibrous-tuberous roots and form clumps; some Hemerocallis produce spreading stolons. Sit the clump where the arching leaves can be seen from the front of a border and allow space for the clump to develop. Expect flowers between June and August, with individual florets usually lasting a single day but appearing in succession across the season. Use Hemerocallis 'Bobby's Lavender Eyes' where summer flowering and a strong structural leaf form are wanted: along mixed borders, at the front of a perennial bed or lining a path.
