About the genus
Heliopsis is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to dry prairies in North and South America. The sunflower-like composite flowerheads are usually yellow, up to 8 cm (3 in) in diameter, and are borne in summer. Species are commonly called ox-eye or oxeye.

Heliopsis scabra 'Light of Loddon' sits in the Heliopsis genus within the Asteraceae and provides a prolonged run of summer colour, flowering from July to September. As a herbaceous perennial it dies back after the season and re-emerges the following year. The cultivar is chosen specifically for its summer-to-early-autumn bloom period. Position it in full sun and a fertile, moisture-retentive soil for the best flowering display; gardens with consistently damp or rich ground suit it well. Stems tend to be upright and can carry heavy flowerheads, so allow spacing for airflow and consider light staking where plants are exposed to wind. Remove spent flowerheads if you wish to limit self-seeding and to keep the border tidy. In a UK garden it works well in mixed herbaceous borders, bold perennial drifts or pollinator-friendly areas where late-summer nectar is needed. Pair with late grasses or autumn-flowering perennials to extend seasonal structure and colour. Expect a dependable block of yellow blooms from July to September that helps bridge high summer into early autumn.
