As its synonym Heliocereus speciosus it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Disocactus speciosus, the sun cactus, is a species of flowering plant in the family Cactaceae. It is native to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala, and has been introduced to the Canary Islands. Grow it in full sun and loam and sand soil. In UK gardens it needs subtropical warmth and glass protection in the UK (RHS H1b). It works well for patio and container plants. It tolerates acid and neutral soils, well-drained conditions and south-facing, north-facing and east-facing aspects. Plant in very well-drained, gritty compost. Full sun.
