Gomphrena haageana, the Rio Grande globe amaranth, is a herbaceous perennial plant that acts as an annual in temperate climates. The most common cultivar is known as Strawberry Fields globe amaranth. It has a red flower reminiscent of a strawberry. It can grow up to 45 cm (18 in) in height. In the wild it grows across North America, Mexico Northeast, Mexico Northwest, Mexico Southwest, New Mexico and other regions. Grow it in full sun and loam soil. In UK gardens it is tender and needs frost-free protection over winter (RHS H2).
