Geum japonicum, known as Asian herb bennet, is a yellow-flowering perennial plant native to North America and East Asia, especially Japan. It may be synonymous with Geum macrophyllum, the North American flower. As a traditional herbal remedy it is known as an astringent and used in poultices. However, in recent years, the Thunberg variant has received attention for other possible medical uses. In the garden it prefers full sun and partial shade and most soil types. In UK gardens it is fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H7). Suggested uses include gravel, rock, beds and borders, cottage/informal and low maintenance. It tolerates soil of any pH, moist but well-drained, well-drained conditions and east, west and south aspects. Plant in well-drained soil in a suitable position. Water during establishment.
