Geum (L.), commonly called avens, is a flowering plant genus of about 60 accepted species and hybrids, within the Rosaceae family in the order of Rosales, in the major group angiosperms. The species of the genus are widely distributed across Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa, and New Zealand. They are closely related to Potentilla and Fragaria.

Geum Cosmpolitan sits within a genus of roughly 60 herbaceous perennials in the rose family that occur naturally across Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and New Zealand. Plants form a basal rosette of leaves and send up wiry flowering stalks; blooms appear in a range of white, red, yellow and orange tones and are produced chiefly from June to August. Plants in this group are often rhizomatous or produce stolons, so allow space for gradual expansion and divide clumps to refresh vigour. Flower stems emerge above the foliage and usually do not require staking; lifting and dividing in spring or autumn will keep colonies in check. Species can retain winter foliage in milder conditions but may die back where temperatures fall below −18 °C. In the garden, position Geum so the basal rosette is not obscured by taller neighbours, letting the flowering stalks read clearly in the border. Deadhead or cut back spent stems after the June to August display to reduce self-seeding and to preserve a neat rosette through the rest of the season.
