Gerbera 'Jacky' belongs to the genus Gerbera within the Asteraceae family and carries the typical daisy-like capitulum of the group. Members of this genus are herbaceous and produce rosettes of foliage from which one or more flowering stems arise; Gerbera 'Jacky' follows this pattern and blooms through the UK summer, from June to September. For culture, use a free-draining, moderately fertile compost and a position that receives plenty of daylight; avoid persistent waterlogging around the crown. Container-grown plants give good control of soil conditions and mean pots can be moved if a lighter or more sheltered spot is needed. Water the rootzone rather than the crowns and remove spent flower stems promptly to concentrate the plant's energy on further flowering. In the garden, Gerbera 'Jacky' works well where single, upright flowerheads can be appreciated — at the front of a border, in mixed containers or beside a paved area where the blooms are visible at close range. Cut individual flower stems at their base when finished to keep the rosette tidy and to reduce the risk of crown rot.
