Theobroma cacao is a small tree, often classified as semi-evergreen to evergreen, reaching heights of up to 8 meters in its natural environment, though it typically remains shorter in cooler regions. Its elongated, oval leaves are a deep green and feature distinct dark veins. From the age of 3 to 4 years, clusters of white flowers with pink calyxes emerge directly from the trunk or branches. The tree produces large, ovoid fruit that transitions from yellow to orange as it matures; the seeds, commonly referred to as 'beans,' are integral to chocolate production. Trees usually start to bear fruit approximately 5 years after planting. While Theobroma cacao can survive for up to 100 years, its productive lifespan is often around half that, with optimal fruiting occurring around the age of 10 years.
