Scrophularia aquatica is a member of the figwort genus Scrophularia (family Scrophulariaceae) and shows the genus's diagnostic square stems and opposite leaves. Its open, two-lipped flowers form clusters at stem tips and appear in the UK from June to September. Species in this genus are known to support some Lepidoptera larvae and a number have traditional medicinal uses.
