Polygala myrtifolia is an evergreen South African shrub or small tree, typically 2–4 m tall, noted for its sweetpea-like flowers that show a brush-like tuft on the keel. Leaves are narrow-oval and often 25–50 mm long, with a pointed tip; some garden forms carry needle-like foliage. Flower colours range from mauve through pink and crimson to white and the blooms open in daylight and close at night. It is a fast-growing pioneer species commonly found in fynbos habitats.

Polygala myrtifolia blooms June to September with mauve, pink, crimson or white sweetpea-like flowers and narrow, pointed leaves.
