It often grows in damp woods on lime substrates. Growing up to 1 m (3.3 ft) tall, it has large, pointed oval leaves with marked serrations. It is native to North America, Albania, Austria, Baltic States, Belarus and other regions. Mature plants reach roughly 0.5-1 metres tall and 0.1-0.5 metres wide, carrying deciduous foliage. In the garden it prefers full sun and partial shade and most soil types. It tolerates soil of any pH, moist but well-drained, well-drained conditions and south-facing, north-facing, west-facing and east-facing aspects.
