Dracunculus canariensis is a tuberous perennial native to tropical regions, featuring glossy green, divided leaves. This plant enters a dormant phase during the summer and resumes growth in late autumn. In spring or early summer, established specimens produce fragrant white spathe flowers, which have a green exterior and a pale cream or yellow spadix at the stem tips. After flowering, it may yield clusters of orange berries.

Dracunculus vulgaris features a robust stem adorned with purple spots and broad leaves that can reach widths of over 30 cm, often displaying narrow lobes with silver markings. The inflorescence comprises a hood-shaped spathe, which can grow up to 60 cm in length and is a deep purple color, complemented by a blackish-purple spadix.
