Asparagus officinalis is a perennial vegetable grown for its edible young shoots. It has evergreen foliage and suits a full-sun, south-facing site. Give each crown about 1 m of room in sandy, loamy or clay soil that is moist but well‑drained with a pH of 6.5–7.5. Wear gloves when picking spears because contact may cause a skin allergy, and do not eat the fruit.
