Anemones cover a remarkable spread of habit and season, from low tuberous woodlanders that carpet the ground in early spring to the tall, branching Japanese kinds that flower on into autumn. The blooms are simple and open — a ring of petal-like sepals around a boss of stamens — and the leaves are usually deeply cut or lobed. Some grow from tubers or rhizomes, others form fibrous-rooted clumps, and colours run from white and shell pink to intense blue and scarlet.
