Gentiana is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the gentian family (Gentianaceae), the tribe Gentianeae, and the monophyletic subtribe Gentianinae. With over 300 species, it is considered a large genus. Gentians are notable for their mostly large trumpet-shaped flowers, which are often of an intense blue hue, though some are also bright yellow.

Gentiana triflora is a herbaceous perennial in the gentian family, originating from China, Mongolia, eastern Russia, Korea and Japan. It grows to roughly 0.5 m, forming upright clumps that produce their flowering display between June and September. The species is typically found in open sites within its native range and is grown for its summer season blooms. Plant in a position that receives full sun and provides a reliably moist but well-drained root run; the species tolerates sandy, loamy and clay soils so long as water does not pond. In UK terms it is rated H7, meaning it is fully hardy through regular winter conditions, and it also corresponds to USDA hardiness approximately zones 4–8. Given its height, place plants at the front or middle of a mixed border or in a dedicated gravel or rock garden bed where summer flowering is wanted. Allow individual clumps room to show their habit at around 0.5 m and avoid sites that dry out completely in summer. Flowering from June to September gives a distinct midsummer contribution in the border and makes establishment and season-long observation straightforward for experienced gardeners and enthusiasts alike.
