Eriogonum grande var. rub. (dark form) is a mat-forming

Leaves are borne mainly at the base, with wavy margins and reach up to 10 centimetres in length. The plant combines a low vegetative habit with conspicuous, upright inflorescences.

Eriogonum grande var. rub. (dark form) belongs to the genus Eriogonum in the knotweed family (Polygonaceae) and is known from north-western Baja California and the Channel Islands of California. In cultivation it presents as a low perennial mat of basal leaves topped by tall, stout stems of clustered flowers; the blooms are recorded as white, pink or red and open in the UK from June to September. Select a sharply drained position with good air circulation and a sunny or very free-draining spot to mirror its native, coastal provenance; avoid waterlogged winter soils that can rot the basal crown. Plants establish into a compact ground cover and will benefit from planting into gravel, gritty mixes or open, impoverished beds where drainage is easiest to maintain. Mulch is best kept light and clear of the crown. Use this Eriogonum where you need low perennial grounding with seasonally prominent floral stems: gravel gardens, coastal schemes, rockeries and well-drained containers are suitable settings. Flower spikes are prominent features through the summer months, so remove spent stems if you prefer a tidier mat once flowering finishes.
