Epilobium dodonaei belongs to the willowherb family Onagraceae and occurs naturally in European mountain areas, where it occupies sandy, rocky and other dry sites. Its perennial, herbaceous habit suits locations where free drainage and a relatively lean soil are the norm rather than rich, moisture-retentive ground. Select a sunny or partially shaded position with well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and only moderate moisture; the species will tolerate dry stretches once established. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged hollows. Plant into gritty compost or a sharp, free-draining planting mix and site where excess winter wet is unlikely. Mulch lightly with coarse grit rather than organic mulch that holds moisture. In a UK garden it works well in rock and gravel beds, dry slopes, and reconstructed alpine or upland-style areas where other moisture-loving perennials struggle. Use it at the front of a gravel border or in crevices of a dry stone wall where drainage is good. Expect flowering from June to September, providing summer colour concentrated on well-lit sites.
