About
Echinacea purpurea dark-stemmed is a member of the Asteraceae genus Echinacea, notable for its dark stems and cone-shaped flowerheads. The blooms are purple and appear from July to October. Plants hold architectural seedheads later in the season, extending interest beyond peak bloom.
About the genus
Echinacea is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the daisy family. It has ten species, which are commonly called coneflowers. They are native only in eastern and central North America, where they grow in wet to dry prairies and open wooded areas.

In the garden
Echinacea purpurea dark-stemmed belongs to the Asteraceae and carries the characteristic coneflower heads on darker-coloured stems. Flowering runs from July to October, when the purple flowerheads provide vertical emphasis in the border and stand out against late-summer planting. Give the plants room so the stemmed flowerheads can be seen without crowding; a clear foreground or mid-border position keeps the cones visible. Maintain airflow around the base by avoiding tight clumps of larger neighbours. Remove spent flowers selectively to tidy the display and prolong the main flowering period, while leaving some heads uncut to maintain structure into autumn. Use the dark stems as a compositional element: they lift the purple cones above lower foliage and work well in mixed herbaceous borders, meadows or naturalistic schemes where a long summer–autumn run of colour is required. Because the flowering extends into October, the upright stems and retained seedheads provide late-season form and texture that complement grasses and perennials that come into their own at the same time.
