It is widely grown as an ornamental plant and houseplant, valued for its richly coloured, evergreen leaves, and thick, irregular stems. In the garden it prefers full sun and partial shade and loam and sand soil. In UK gardens it needs tropical warmth and glass protection in the UK (RHS H1a). Suggested uses include houseplants and conservatory and greenhouse. It tolerates soil of any pH, moist but well-drained conditions and south-facing, east-facing and west-facing aspects.
