In the garden
A member of the sunflower family, Doronicum carpetanum is an herbaceous perennial native to Portugal, Spain, Gibraltar and Andorra. It is adapted to the cooler, often mountainous places of the western Mediterranean and bears yellow, daisy-like flowerheads in the spring months. The plant sits naturally in sites that combine summer coolness with reliable drainage. Give Doronicum carpetanum a free-draining spot and a position with partial to full sun; it tolerates stronger sun where soils stay cool and not waterlogged. Because of its origin, it performs best where roots remain relatively cool—avoid heavy, compacted soils and stagnant moisture. Mulching with gritty material or placing it on a slope or raised bed will improve drainage where garden soil is slower to release water. In the UK it is most often used for early-season colour in gravel and rock gardens, the front of mixed borders and on sunny banks where drainage is good. Plants carry their yellow flowerheads in spring and into early summer, making them straightforward contributors to a seasonal display. Expect distinctive yellow, daisy-like flowers from April to June.
